About Gumps:
Gumps was founded in San Francisco, California, by Gertrude Gump and her husband in 1861. They partnered with brothers Solomon and Gustave Gump, who purchased the business shortly afterward. After rebuilding after the 1906 earthquake, Solomon’s son, A.L. Gump, expanded the company of luxury goods, sourcing goods from Japan and China to add an exotic element to their offerings, including their famed jade jewelry. Richard Gump, A.L.’s son, was named president in 1947 after his father died. He expanded the business even further during the 1950s through catalog sales. New stores were opened in upscale locations around the United States during his time at the helm. He retired in 1975. Gumps has changed hands many times since then but still operates from its flagship store in San Francisco.
